Dr. Joseph H. Thompson is, first and foremost, a West Virginian and proud of it. He was born in Huntington, WV in 1960 and was raised in the Tri-State area by his loving parents, Daisy and Linvill Thompson. Dr. Thompson lived part of his youth in the City of Huntington and also the Milton area where he resides now. He is a graduate of the former Milton High School Greyhounds.
Dr. Thompson attended Marshall University in the early ’80s and entered Marshall as a chemistry major. After three years of undergraduate work at Marshall University, Dr Thompson was accepted to West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 1981 where he graduated from the WVU Dental School with his Doctorate in Dental Surgery. He was ranked 5th in his class size of 52.
Dr. Thompson worked in the Pediatric Department at WVU Dental School for one year then started his Orthodontic graduate training at West Virginia University in 1986.
He graduated from the Orthodontic program in 1988 with a Masters of Science in the Study of Orthodontia. Upon graduation, Dr. Thompson decided it was time to put this education to good use and purchased an orthodontic practice from Dr. Robert Jennings in Huntington, WV. In 2014, Dr Thompson expanded his practice to the Teays Valley / Scott Depot area and took over Dr Craig Miller’s office.
Associations / Community Involvement
Dr. Thompson is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, West Virginia Dental Association and Huntington Dental Society. He has been a delegate to the American Dental Association representing the State of West Virginia. He is also a member of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and is an advocate for small businesses. He is very involved in local schools becoming their business partners. He gives lectures during the school year on dentistry and dental hygiene. Personal Interests
Dr. Thompson enjoys life very much and loves to work with his staff and his patients so that they can have the smile they’ve always wanted. His hobbies are computers, music and jewelry. Dr. Thompson has a audio recording studio, develops websites, like this one, does jewelry repair, casts/manufactures jewelry, does jewelry CAD work (3DJewelryModels.net), computer animation and computer repairs. He also maintains a honey bee apiary. He is into a lot of items, and loves every minute of it.
Dr. Thompson and his wife, Jackie, were married in 1981 and have lived in Milton, WV for many years. They have three daughters, Shawndra, Rachelle, and Keely. Shawndra earned her medical degree from Marshall University Medical School. Rachelle graduate from Virginia Tech Veterinarian School and Keely is in her last year of Nursing School at Marshall University.
